PDA Kirwan was a stalwart of all the films made by Whiskerino. He appeared in 14
features and worked behind the camera on a further 4 pictures. A driven
perfectionist he proved a real asset to Whiskerino.
Already an established actor he joined the Whiskerino Productions cast
early in the 1930s, he leant some well needed respectability to the
studio. Kirwan had toured Britain for some ten years learning his
craft as part of the Winterbourne House players.
Confirmed details of his film work prior to joining Whiskerino productions
are sketchy
at best. In his unpublished autobiography he claims to have starred in 11 films before
moving to the studio, starting his film career as 3rd Urchin in an Amistone
quickie. With the immortal words "Spare a tanner. . ." he started a cinematic
journey that would lead him down a path of elation and frustration.
He is perhaps most strongly associated with his memorable portrayal of the Bar Keep at
the Transelvation Arms Inn. This was a role he played a total of
12
times (in 10 films and twice on the stage). He was also Egor, one half of the
memorable double act from the Horror Canon.
