Charles F. Reed played one of his most celebrated roles in this film. As
Julio he sang and danced his way into the hearts of thousands.
Joe O's Knee Tremblin Five appear in the film as Julio's band - The Pienacoladas.
The group were an aspiring combo who hoped to use the film to launch their careers.
Despite appearing on the studio compilation album Beards and Ballads, a
successful music career did not follow.
Julio was a cabaret singer desperately trying to break into the big time. He
lived above the chip shop owned by Joanna Fortess. Julio meets and falls in love
with Celia Raindrop after saving her sister Tessa from a local thug during one of his
cabaret sets. After an idyllic summer (full of Reed's warbling) Julio is finally
noticed by the self styled recording guru Jack Vinyl and offered the opportunity of a
lifetime. However after Celia is taken ill, Julio must decide whether to gamble
everything for his career.
Celia: "You have to let the world hear your voice. We need the money,
we have to eat."
Julio: "I'm not a machine. This is not just some larynx for sale!"
Vinyl: "I'm giving you the chance to be really big, and I don't mean
fat."
