Initially this film was thought to be extremely violent, but the boxing scenes seem
very tame by today's standards. As a young Charles F. Reed looks on, Blisters
Maguire enters his local bar (which would subsequently become the Transelvation
Arms) and accidentally knocks a spittoon over a burly looking thug. In the
ensuing fight Blisters puts the villain and his friends through their paces and through
the window. Having gained a taste for the noble art he makes a living by fighting at
local fares and village fundraisers.
After one particularly brutal church fete, Blisters has to be nursed back to
health by Delilah, who unknown to him is the prize fighting champ's girl. Unable to
find any bandages she fixes Blister's head with brown paper and makes him a strong vinegar
poultice. The champ smells this on Blisters and realises what has been going on.
He challenges Blisters to a match at the milkmaid's bizarre the following week.
With the help of Delilah and her strong vinegar remedies Blisters wins the
gruelling twelve round match. He also wins Delilah's heart, and the tombola.
Delilah: "If he smells your fear you're done for."
Blisters Maguire: "I'd be surprised if he could smell anything over this
vinegar."
Announcer: "The boxing match builds to the finale that is the needlepoint
display."
